On February 24, 2022 in London, the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) of the United Kingdom signed a joint declaration cooperation intention, which aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two regulators. This joint declaration is part of the new bilateral strategic partnership on climate action, clean energy and green growth, which was agreed in December during the 3rd session of the Morocco-United Kingdom strategic dialogue and of the inaugural meeting of the United Kingdom-Morocco Association Council. ANRE and Ofgem held their first bilateral discussions in March 2021, during which the two regulators welcomed the opportunities for enhanced collaboration in the regulation of the energy market. Note that ANRE and Ofgem participated in the Pre-COP26 consultative discussions in Glasgow alongside 18 other regulators from around the world, leading to the launch of the “Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA)” initiative. This global collaboration platform between energy regulators essentially aimed at accelerating the pace of the energy transition has the main purpose of achieving climate objectives. Post-RETA, the two regulators continued their bilateral discussions focused mainly on the regulatory regimes for interconnections in the two countries. These discussions affirmed that the two regulators maintain mutually beneficial dialogues, particularly those related to the field of regulation which would best enable the decarbonization of the energy system through the exchange of information, experiences and good practices. The Chairman of Ofgem Mr Martin Cave declared on this occasion that “The transition to decarbonisation is an absolute imperative for us all. Working with our partners around the world is crucial to achieving our goals in this area. I am therefore delighted that we have formed such a close alliance with our colleagues at the National Electricity Regulatory Authority of Morocco. »

For his part, Mr. Abdelatif Bardach, President of ANRE, welcomed this joint declaration constituting a key step in bilateral cooperation between the two countries in terms of energy transition. He declared: “Being fully aware of the importance of interconnections for the development of the national energy market, ANRE looks forward to working hand in hand with its British counterpart in this area. Also, to take a big step towards our common objective, which is to promote the deployment of renewable energies and to go further in the decarbonization of the energy system. “
