The National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) received, on the 19th of October 2023, at the ANRE headquarters in Rabat, a distinguished delegation from the Ministry of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) of the United Kingdom. The delegation included Marc Sherrat, Deputy Director of Renewable Electricity, and Adam Chamberlain, Head of Diplomatic Policy, Security, and Regulation of DESNZ, accompanied by Tom Hill, Country Director and Consul General of the United
Kingdom in Casablanca.

This visit by the British delegation reflects the keen interest of the United Kingdom in the energy potential of Morocco, especially its initiatives in renewable energy. The meeting illustrates Morocco’s strategic position as a pioneering and essential player in the energy sector in Africa.

During the meeting, Abdellatif Bardach, President of ANRE, discussed the main advances and ambitions of Morocco in terms of energy transition, highlighting the forward-looking vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, May God Assist Him. He also emphasized the crucial role of bilateral collaboration between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United Kingdom. As part of this enhanced partnership, ANRE concretized its relations with the British energy regulator (Ofgem) in 2022 through the signing of a memorandum of understanding. This collaboration has since been enriched with several initiatives, particularly within the framework of the Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) initiative.

Various other topics related to the regulation of the electricity sector were discussed, including the Grid Code, accounting unbundling, and other undergoing projects overseen by ANRE to ensure the proper conduct and transparency of the energy sector in Morocco.

This high-level meeting marks an important step in further strengthening bilateral relations between Morocco and the United Kingdom and opens up new opportunities for cooperation in the energy sector between the two nations.
