MEDREG Secretariat visits Rabat to strengthen collaboration with the Moroccan Regulator

The President of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE), Mr. Abdellatif BARDACH, received in Rabat on July 25, 2019 MEDREG Secretariat represented by Mrs. Veronica Lenzi and Mrs. Daphne Lacroix. A visit that aims at strengthening collaboration with the Moroccan regulator, reinforcing MEDREG's messages at the national and regional levels and involving them in the association's national and regional reform activities.

During this meeting, Mr. BARDACH recalled the main objectives of the new regulator and described the current state of the electricity market and the RES objectives set by the Moroccan government.

Meanwhile, MEDREG will support the ANRE during the second half of 2019 with study visits to Spain in the premises of the CNMC and to Greece in the offices of the Greek regulator RAE on the theme of independence and renewable energy sources.

Regarding the support activity for 2020, Mr. BARDACH said he would appreciate concrete advice on the implementation of unbundling of the Moroccan electricity sector, while in 2021, the theme of tariffs will be crucial. Finally, he said he would welcome MEDREG’s comments and input on the ANRE’s communication strategy.

The MEDREG Secretariat also indicated that, over the next three years and at the request of Moroccan ANRE, the Association of Mediterranean Regulators will continue its personalized support through information exchange, study visits and training of the regulator.

MEDREG took advantage of their visit to the ANRE to meet with the Minister of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development and the EU delegation in Rabat. The various meetings provided useful information on Morocco’s national energy priorities which are the focal point of MEDREG’s strategy and on concrete technical assistance activities.
